About
Plains viscacha. A large member of the family Chinchillidae that lives in groups on the pampas and semi-arid areas of Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Head-body length is 47–66 cm and weight 2–8 kg, with marked sexual dimorphism in which males are larger than females. They dig large burrows (vishcachera) with the forelimbs and live in groups centered on nests that have complex tunnels and numerous entrances. Herbivorous, feeding mainly on grasses and seeds, and they also practice coprophagy. Nocturnal, exhibiting social behaviors such as alarm vocalizations, grooming, and dust bathing. Because of its wide distribution it is currently classified as Least Concern, but local hunting and habitat alteration have impacts.
