About
The plantain squirrel (Callosciurus notatus) is found mainly around the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo, and adapts to a range of habitats from primary and secondary forests and mangroves to plantations, parks and other areas with varying elevation. Head and body length is 15–23 cm and weight about 160–260 g; it lives primarily in the trees. It feeds broadly on fruits, seeds, flowers, tree sap and insects. Individuals are often solitary, but multiple animals may gather where food is abundant. Breeding occurs year-round; the gestation period is about 40 days and 1–4 young are born in a nest. Population numbers are increasing and the IUCN assesses the species as Least Concern.
