About
The Alpine ibex is a member of the goat family that lives on steep rocky terrain and alpine meadows. It is typically found at elevations of about 1,600–3,300 m and is native primarily to France and Italy. Males are large and bear impressive horns; herds are often segregated by sex, and males compete with their horns during the breeding season. They feed on grasses, leaves, lichens, and other vegetation. Although population numbers have recovered, low genetic diversity and disease remain challenges. Conservation status: Least Concern.
