About
The South American coati (Nasua nasua) is a diurnal omnivorous mammal that inhabits extensive forested areas of South America. It moves both on the ground and in the trees, sleeping and nesting in trees and giving birth there. It feeds on fruit, invertebrates, and small mammals. Groups (bands) are mainly composed of females and young, while adult males lead solitary lives. Gestation lasts about 74–77 days and several young are born at a time. Although its range is wide, populations have declined locally due to habitat loss and hunting; its conservation status is Near Threatened.
