About
Afro-Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus). Distributed along the southern African coast and the southeastern coast of Australia, populations differ in ecology and foraging depth by subspecies. A large fur seal, males have a conspicuous mane and form large colonies during the breeding season. Diet includes demersal fish, sardine-like fishes, squid, and occasionally seabirds; they sometimes forage in groups. Reproduction occurs once a year and includes a cycle with delayed implantation; mothers raise their pups by repeatedly alternating foraging trips and nursing. Although there has been conflict with hunting and fisheries, some populations are currently recovering and are under conservation.
