About
The red river hog (Potamochoerus porcus) is a nocturnal pig that inhabits tropical rainforests and surrounding areas of West to Central Africa. It is characterized by vivid red fur and white cheek hair and lives in groups consisting of one male, multiple females, and their young. It roots in the soil, is omnivorous—feeding on fruits, roots, insects, and carrion—and is also a capable swimmer. Breeding varies by region but most commonly females give birth once a year. It is currently widely distributed and is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
