About
The banded palm civet (Hemigalus derbyanus) is a species of viverrid that inhabits primary forests of Southeast Asia. Body length is 46–53 cm, weight 1–3 kg, and tail length 25–38 cm; the flanks bear broad banded markings. It is nocturnal and primarily terrestrial, preying on insects and worms, crustaceans, snails, spiders, ants, amphibians, and lizards; in captivity it may also eat fruit. It is strongly solitary, resting in ground burrows or in trees during the day. Individuals communicate by odors from scent glands and are solitary except for breeding and rearing young. Habitat destruction, hunting, and capture are threats, and it is classified as Near Threatened.
