About
American tapir (Tapirus terrestris). It is widely distributed across lowland tropical rainforests and humid swamp forests of South America, including Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. It is characterized by a long snout and a robust body; total length is about 1.8–2.5 m and weight is several hundred kilograms. It is a browser–grazer that mainly eats leaves and fruit, and because it is skilled at swimming and diving it depends on waterside habitats. It is nocturnal and typically solitary; gestation lasts about 400 days and usually a single offspring is born. Population numbers are declining, and it is listed as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List category II).
