About
The fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a strongly fish-eating cat that inhabits riparian forests and coastal wetlands and enters the water to swim and dive to catch prey. It mainly eats fish, shellfish, and crustaceans; its front paws have partial webbing and its claws are not fully retractable, adaptations suited to capturing prey in water. It is nocturnal and solitary; breeding occurs about once a year, with a gestation of about 63 days and typically 2–3 kittens born. Its population has declined due to habitat destruction and conflict with humans, and it is classified as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List Category II).
