About
The Eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus) is a cottontail widely distributed from North America to Central and South America, thriving by adapting to diverse environments. Body length is about 33–48 cm, weight about 0.8–1.5 kg, and it molts twice a year. Its diet ranges widely from herbaceous plants to woody plants, switching foods seasonally. It is active at night and during dawn and dusk, living solitarily. Nests are shallowly made in places such as under fallen logs, and gestation is about 28 days with an average litter of 3–5 young, indicating high reproductive capacity. Because of its wide distribution, its conservation status is assessed as Least Concern.
