About
The slender loris (Loris tardigradus) is a nocturnal, small primate that inhabits evergreen forests from lowland to highland in southwestern Sri Lanka. Its body length is 18–26 cm, weight 120–230 g, and it has no tail. It feeds mainly on insects and is thought to include toxic prey. It is primarily solitary but may gather when sleeping. Scent-based communication using urine and secretions from elbow scent glands is prominent; the secretions are believed to mix with saliva and may cause discomfort to predators. Gestation lasts about 5–6 months, producing 1–2 offspring; weaning occurs at about six months and sexual maturity at about one year. Populations have declined sharply due to habitat destruction and hunting, and it is classified as Critically Endangered (I B).
