About
The North Sulawesi babirusa (Babyrousa celebensis) is an endemic babirusa distributed on the island of Sulawesi. Its primary habitats are wet tropical rainforests and swamp thickets, and it is a good swimmer that sometimes crosses rivers. Body length is about 85–110 cm; males are larger than females, and only males have long upper canine teeth that protrude outward. It is omnivorous, feeding widely on leaves, fruits, roots, insects, and carrion, and a characteristic of its foraging is that it uses its hooves rather than its snout. Social structure includes solitary or small groups of males and mother-and-offspring groups of females, and breeding occurs from the earlier part of the year through summer. Populations have declined due to habitat destruction and hunting, and the IUCN classifies it as Vulnerable (Category II).
