About
The aardwolf (Proteles cristata) is a small member of the hyena family that inhabits dry savannas and grasslands of eastern and southern Africa and has a specialized diet that feeds mainly on termites. It has morphological adaptations suited to termite feeding, including a long, wide tongue and a hairless muzzle, while its molars and canine teeth are reduced. Nocturnal and generally solitary when foraging, it forms pair-based social units and rests in burrows during the day. It obtains most of its water from termites and therefore is adapted to arid environments, drinking little free water. Breeding involves mating in June–July, a gestation of about 90 days, and litters of 2–5 young raised by both parents. Its population is stable and it is listed as Least Concern.
