About
The gelada baboon is a primate that inhabits the Ethiopian Highlands, occurring in grasslands, shrublands, and cliffs at elevations of about 1,800–4,400 m. Diurnal, it feeds primarily on herbs and also consumes roots, flowers, seeds, and small animals. Social groups are organized in multiple tiers built on one-male units, forming aggregations that range from tens to hundreds of individuals. Communication emphasizing skin displays — such as the bare red chest, thin eyelids, and lip movements — is well developed, and about 30 distinct vocalizations are used. Reproduction shows little seasonality; the gestation period is 5–6 months, and weaning and sexual maturity take several years. Conservation status: Least Concern.
