About
The variegated spider monkey (Ateles hybridus) is a large arboreal primate that lives in the canopy of tropical rainforests in northern Colombia and Venezuela. It has a long, prehensile tail and feeds primarily on fruit. It forms multi-male multi-female groups of about 30 individuals, but often splits into smaller subgroups while foraging. Gestation lasts about 230 days and usually results in a single offspring; slow growth and reproduction mean populations take a long time to recover. Habitat destruction has led to its classification as Critically Endangered (IUCN Red List category CR).
