About
The red howler (Alouatta seniculus) is a New World monkey characterized by its red fur and is widely distributed across South America. It inhabits humid forests and mangrove forests, feeding mainly on fruit, with leaves and flowers also included in its diet. Groups are typically single-male, multi-female units of about 4 to 10 individuals; they possess a powerful call produced by a large throat and resonating sacs that carry sound over long distances. Gestation lasts about 190 days and usually results in a single offspring; socially the species displays a matrilineal structure. Its range is broad and it is currently assessed as Least Concern, though it is affected by deforestation.
