About
The gundi (Ctenodactylus gundi) is a rodent found in North Africa, primarily on the southern slopes of the Atlas Mountains and in Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. It inhabits rocky desert areas and does not build burrows, instead sheltering in rock crevices. It is characterized by short legs, a plump body, flat ears, and comb-like stiff hairs on the hind feet, which it uses for grooming and for bracing on rocky surfaces. Diurnal and social, gundis form groups and communicate by vocalizations and physical contact. They feed on xerophytic plants and are adapted to survive without drinking free water. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern.
