About
The anoa is a small wild water buffalo (Bubalus depressicornis) that is restricted to dense forests on Sulawesi and Buton islands. It prefers rivers and damp habitats and engages in wallowing and bathing. Both males and females have horns. It is primarily a leaf-eating browser but also consumes grasses, fruits, and aquatic plants. It mostly lives solitarily; although many aspects of its reproduction are unclear, gestation lasts about 275–315 days and usually results in a single offspring. Its population is declining, and the IUCN classifies it as Endangered (Category I B).
