About
Tayra. A medium-sized mustelid (Eira barbara) distributed in tropical forests, cloud forests, and dry forests of Central and South America, it uses both the ground and the canopy in its daily life. Omnivorous, it eats rodents and small mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, fruits, and carrion; it has been reported to cache food and return to consume it when convenient. Primarily diurnal and often solitary, its flexible lifestyle allows a wide distribution and it is classified as Least Concern, although local declines have been observed due to deforestation and hunting.
