About
The woodchuck (Marmota monax) is a terrestrial marmot native to North America, occurring in Canada and the United States. It digs burrows and lives in open lowlands, agricultural areas, and woodland edges near human habitation; many individuals hibernate in their burrows for several months in winter. Body length is about 41.5–67.5 cm and weight is 2–6 kg. It has scent glands in the cheeks and near the anus, which are used for communication between individuals. Its diet is broad, including grasses, leaves, bark, insects, eggs, and crops. Predators include wolves, coyotes, and birds of prey. Breeding occurs after hibernation in March–April; gestation lasts about 31–32 days and typically about four young are born. The IUCN classifies it as Least Concern.
