About
The bonobo is an ape that inhabits the tropical rainforests of central Congo. Closely related to the chimpanzee, it is more slender and has a more peaceful social structure. It mainly eats fruits, and also consumes leaves, young shoots, and honey. It forms mixed-sex groups of about 30–60 individuals, and sexual behavior within the group plays an important role in tension reduction and social cohesion. It is largely terrestrial, using knuckle-walking and bipedal walking. Breeding is not seasonal; gestation is about eight months and typically results in a single offspring, with weaning at about four years. Habitat destruction, hunting, and disease have reduced the population to an estimated 15,000–20,000 individuals, and it is classified as Endangered (I B). Scientific name: Pan paniscus.
