The Black spider monkey (Ateles paniscus) is a spider monkey that inhabits tall forests in northeastern Brazil and the Guianas. Diurnal, it feeds mainly on fruit and contributes to forest seed dispersal by passing seeds undigested. It lives an arboreal life using a thick, prehensile tail and forms fission–fusion groups of about 30 individuals. Reproduction is seasonal, and its conservation status is Vulnerable (Category II).
