About
The Chacoan peccary (Catagonus wagneri) is a distinctive peccary restricted to the dry Gran Chaco region of northern Argentina into Bolivia and Paraguay. It is adapted to a diet composed mainly of cacti and obtains water from those plants; adaptations such as a two-chambered stomach and concentrated urine help it survive the harsh environment. Diurnal, it forms small groups of up to about 10 individuals and shows territorial behavior, marking with scent glands. In recent years its numbers have declined due to habitat destruction and hunting, and it is listed as Endangered (IUCN category I B).
