About
The Guinea baboon (Papio papio) is a baboon native to the savanna regions of West Africa. It is diurnal and omnivorous, feeding on roots, seeds, fruits, new shoots, insects and meat, and can store food in cheek pouches. Body length is about 0.5–1.2 m and body weight 13–26 kg, with marked sexual dimorphism. They typically form one-male, multi-female groups. Intimate greeting behaviors between males are well known, and communication uses vocalizations and grooming. Gestation lasts about six months; sexual maturity is estimated at about 5–6 years for males and 4–5 years for females. Habitat loss and hunting are causes for concern, and the species is classified as Near Threatened.
