About
Pied tamarin (Saguinus bicolor). A rare species restricted to the area around Manaus, Brazil; characterized by a clear division of body coloration from the chest rearward. Diurnal, it primarily eats fruit and also uses flowers, nectar, and tree resin. They form groups of 4–10 individuals and mark territory with scent glands. Reproduction shows weak seasonality, and only dominant females breed within the social structure. Populations have declined sharply due to deforestation, capture for the pet trade, and competition with other species; it is listed as Critically Endangered (IUCN Category I A).
