About
Pudu puda. One of the world’s smallest deer, it inhabits temperate forests of southern Chile and southwestern Argentina; its name in local languages means “little deer.” It prefers dense understory vegetation and, as a browser that feeds mainly on leaves, has four stomach chambers. It is active at night and during dawn and dusk, and lives primarily solitary lives. Breeding occurs in spring with mating followed by a gestation of about seven months, typically producing a single fawn that becomes independent quickly. Predation by introduced species, livestock, and domestic dogs, together with habitat destruction, are threats, and it is listed as Near Threatened.
