About
Addax. The species originally ranged across the southern edge of the Sahara Desert — the Sahel — and in gravel deserts, sand deserts, and dry riverbeds (wadis). It is characterized by a pale coat and long twisted horns in both males and females, and is adapted to life on sandy ground with widely splayed hooves and its coloration. It mainly feeds on grasses such as those of the Poaceae family, and uses woody plants during the dry season. It moves in groups of a few to several dozen with one male and multiple females, and is known to rest during the day by digging depressions. The gestation period is about 257–264 days with a single offspring per birth, but wild individuals are now extremely few, and the species is listed as Critically Endangered (IUCN Category 1A).
