About
The nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) is an antelope that inhabits dense thickets and savanna woodlands of southern Africa. Males and females differ in coloration and body size: mature males are dark gray, while females and young are a lighter brown. They require water frequently and are both browsers and grazers, feeding on grasses, leaves, fruits, and seeds. Socially, females form herds of about 2 to 30 individuals, while males are solitary or occur in loose bachelor groups. Gestation lasts about seven months, and after birth mothers hide their young in thickets as part of their parental behavior. Population levels are stable, and the IUCN classifies the species as Least Concern.
