About
The black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) is a browser found in savannas, forests, and grasslands, feeding mainly on tree leaves and showing a preference for acacia. Body length is about 3–3.8 m, shoulder height 1.4–1.7 m, and weight about 0.8–1.4 tonnes; it bears two horns, one behind the other. It is not very active during the day and tends to feed in the early morning and evening; males are solitary and display territorial behavior. Breeding occurs year-round; gestation lasts 15–16 months and the interval between births is about 2.5–3 years. Due to past intense poaching and habitat loss, populations have declined sharply, and it is currently classified as Critically Endangered (CR).
