About
Risso's dolphin. A medium-sized toothed whale that widely migrates the offshore tropical and temperate seas; adults reach 2.8–4 m in length and 300–500 kg in weight. Its coloration lightens with age, and its body is characterized by scarring on the skin. There are only 2–7 pairs of teeth on the lower jaw, and it mainly feeds by suctioning and swallowing squid whole. It forages at night and spends the daytime traveling or resting; groups range from a few individuals to several dozen, and occasionally form large aggregations. The species as a whole is assessed as Least Concern.
