About
Oryx (Gemsbok). Lives in dry to semi-arid areas, grasslands, and scrub in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. The body is large and both sexes have long straight horns; they primarily eat grasses at ground level but in the dry season also use leaves and rhizomes. Herds are often about 10 individuals and composition is varied, though at times they form large aggregations of several dozen to several hundred. Gestation is about 8.5 months and typically one offspring is born. Conservation status is assessed as Least Concern.
