About
The chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) is a bovine adapted to rocky mountains living in Europe and western Asia. It uses rocky slopes and grasslands at elevations of 200–3,500 m and moves across steep terrain with excellent jumping and running ability. Most are diurnal; females and young form herds of 15–30 individuals, while mature males act alone. They remain active in winter by feeding on lichens and mosses, and the breeding season is from autumn to winter. The IUCN assesses the species as Least Concern.
