About
The Common genet (Genetta genetta) is a viverrid native primarily to Africa, with distribution extending into the Middle East and parts of Europe. Adapted to various forests and rocky areas, it has a body suited for an arboreal lifestyle. It preys mainly on small mammals such as rodents, as well as birds, lizards, and insects, and uses fruit in autumn and winter. Body length is about 40–55 cm, with a long tail, and retractile claws. It is nocturnal and solitary; scent glands, urine, and feces are used for marking. Reproduction is seasonal; gestation lasts about 10–11 weeks, and females give birth to and rear several young in a nest. Because it has a wide range and stable population, its conservation status is Least Concern.
