About
The gentle lemur (Hapalemur griseus) is a bamboo-eating lemur that inhabits tropical moist forests in east-central and central-western Madagascar. Its body length is about 65 cm and it is small, weighing under 1 kg; about three-quarters of its diet consists of bamboo leaves and shoots. It also eats fruit and fungi. Group structure varies, but pair-based groups are common; groups of around five individuals hold territories, and males mark them with vocalizations and scent glands. Breeding occurs toward the dry season, with a gestation of about 140 days and the birth of one or two young. Populations have declined due to hunting and deforestation, and the species is listed as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List category II).
