About
The Indian giant flying squirrel (Petaurista petaurista) is a large gliding squirrel distributed widely across Asia, inhabiting various forests such as humid evergreen and temperate forests up to 3,000 m elevation. Head‑and‑body length is 28.5–55 cm, weight about 990–3,200 g, and tail length 34–63 cm. It glides by spreading its patagium, typically covering 100–150 m and able to glide several hundred meters at most. Nocturnal and solitary, it rests in tree cavities during the day. Its diet includes fruits, nuts, young leaves, and buds. The breeding season is March–August, and females give birth to 1–2 young per litter. Although its range is wide and it occurs in many protected areas and the IUCN lists it as Least Concern, habitat destruction and other threats affect populations.
