About
The king colobus (Colobus polykomos) is a colobus monkey that inhabits the coastal tropical rainforests of West Africa. Head-and-body length ranges from 45 to 70 cm; males weigh about 10 kg and females about 8 kg. The tail is long and can be white. Diurnal, it feeds mainly on leaves and also consumes fruit and flowers. It has a constricted stomach adapted for folivory, and its thumbs are largely undeveloped so it hooks its fingers when moving through the trees. Social organization consists of small one-male, multi-female or multi-male, multi-female groups with strong bonds among females. Breeding tends to be related to food availability; gestation is about six months, and infants are born with white coloration. Habitat destruction and hunting have led to its classification as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List category II).
