About
Red-tailed Monkey. A small guenon distributed from Central to East Africa in tropical rainforests and swamp forests. It mainly eats fruit and also consumes seeds, flowers, nectar, and leaves. It is notable for its red tail and the white “heart” marking beside the nose. It has cheek pouches that allow it to temporarily store food while feeding. Groups are typically polygynous with one male and multiple females, numbering 10–30 individuals, and form matrilineal societies; they may also form mixed-species groups. Breeding occurs year-round with seasonal peaks; gestation is about six months and usually results in a single offspring. The species is currently listed as Least Concern.
