Long-haired Spider Monkey (Ateles belzebuth). Lives in tropical rainforests of northern South America, primarily inhabiting the canopy. Diurnal and primarily frugivorous, it also eats leaves and seeds and is an important seed disperser. Groups are multi-male multi-female numbering about 20–40 individuals, usually splitting into smaller subgroups for daily activities. Gestation lasts about 210–225 days with a single offspring per birth; weaning occurs at 12–15 months. Populations are declining due to habitat destruction and hunting, and the species is listed as threatened.
