About
Chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera). A rodent that inhabits dry rocky areas and rugged terrain in Chile, occurring from elevations of a few dozen meters up to about 2,000 m. Head-body length is 22.5–38 cm, tail length 7.5–15 cm, with females tending to be larger. It has very dense fur and is primarily herbivorous, feeding on herbs and seeds, though it occasionally consumes insects and bird eggs. Nocturnal, it forms colonies of about 100 individuals and rests in rock crevices during the day. Reproduction is seasonal; gestation is about 111 days and typically two young are born at a time. Its range is limited, and due to habitat destruction and other threats it is classified as Endangered I B.
