About
The Philippine tarsier (Carlito syrichta) is a small prosimian that inhabits coastal and lowland forests in the Philippines. Head-body length is 8–16 cm and weight is 85–165 g; the tail is long, about 25 cm. It is nocturnal and primarily preys on insects, frogs, lizards, fish, and shrimp, preferring to stay in trees at heights under 2 m. It often moves in mated pairs and sometimes lives in small groups. Reproduction is not strictly seasonal and can occur twice a year; mothers and infants show a long gestation period and rapid motor development. Population numbers are declining due to forest destruction and high infant mortality, and the species is classified as Near Threatened.
