About
The dugong (Dugong dugon) is a sirenian distributed in warm coastal waters from the Indian Ocean to the South Pacific. It primarily feeds on seagrasses that grow on shallow seabeds and is adapted to bottom feeding by having a large snout that slopes downward. Adults typically measure about 2.4–4 m in length, and the tail fluke is pinched in the center. Dugongs usually inhabit shallow areas; groups are fluid and bonds between individuals tend to be weak. Gestation is long and intervals between births are wide, so reproductive rates are low. Populations have declined due to illegal hunting, bycatch, and habitat destruction, and the species is classified as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List Category VU).
