About
The African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is a forest-dwelling elephant that inhabits the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa. It is characterized by rounded, small-edged ears and relatively straight tusks. It feeds on more than 100 species of plants, primarily fruits, and plays an important role in maintaining the forest by dispersing seeds through long-distance movements. Herds consist of a few adult females and their young; males are generally solitary outside the breeding season and exhibit breeding-season behavior known as musth. The species is threatened with extinction due to hunting for ivory and habitat loss.
