About
The Rocky Mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) is a large goat native to alpine and subalpine areas of North America, ranging from Alaska to the Rocky Mountains, adapted to life on cliffs and rocky terrain. It moves across steep slopes using its white double coat, splayed hooves, and short limbs, and feeds on a variety of plants including grasses, broad-leaved herbs, and mosses. Herds are divided into female-led and male-led groups; breeding occurs in autumn and births are concentrated the following spring. Kid mortality is high, the natural environment is harsh, but the species is currently of Least Concern with population numbers relatively stable.
