About
The Steller's northern sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) is one of the largest pinnipeds in the family Otariidae and inhabits the coasts of the North Pacific. At breeding sites (rookeries), males come ashore early to establish territories, and successful males mate with many females. Females, after giving birth, repeatedly make short foraging trips while nursing and raising their young. Their diet mainly consists of medium- to large-sized fish and cephalopods, and predators include killer whales. Populations vary regionally, with increases and declines mixed across the species, and the IUCN lists it as Near Threatened.
