About
The zebra mouse (Lemniscomys barbarus) is a small rodent that inhabits grasslands, coastal dunes, open woodlands, and agricultural areas of North Africa, including coastal regions of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. It has a small body with a relatively long tail and prominent stripes that persist from youth. Its diet consists of grass stems and leaves, seeds, and crops; predators include genets, mongooses, jackals, and birds of prey. It is diurnal, constructs nests in the ground with a single entrance, and relies primarily on scent for communication. Breeding tends to avoid the winter months. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
