Striped hyaena (Hyaena hyaena). It inhabits open, arid areas from North Africa through the Arabian Peninsula to the Indian subcontinent. A scavenger that primarily feeds on carrion, it has powerful jaws capable of crushing bone and hide, but it also captures small mammals and eats fruit. Characterized by its stripes and an erect mane, it is typically solitary or lives in small groups. Nocturnal, it ranges widely, and its numbers have declined due to persecution and hunting by humans; it is classified as Near Threatened.
