About
The silvered leaf monkey (Trachypithecus auratus) is an Old World langur endemic to Indonesia, occurring in eastern Java, Bali, Lombok and other islands. It lives in forests including coastal woodland and mangroves, feeding primarily on young leaves, with fruits and insects also eaten. Groups typically consist of one adult male and multiple adult females numbering about 6–23 individuals and form matrilineal societies. Infants are bright orange and change to the adult coloration at around six months of age. They have a multi-chambered stomach adapted for folivory and contribute to seed dispersal. Populations have declined due to anthropogenic forest destruction and hunting, and the species is listed as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List category II in some systems).
