About
The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is a distinct canid lineage that inhabits grasslands, marshes, and scrublands of eastern South America. It is characterized by a high shoulder and long legs and by a black mane along the neck that becomes erect when the animal is excited; it also exhibits a distinctive pacing gait. Omnivorous, it feeds on mammals, birds, and insects and favors fruits, which can make up about half of its diet. Individuals are usually solitary or form long-term pairs and maintain territories. Its conservation status is Near Threatened (NT).
