About
The White-lipped tamarin (Saguinus labiatus) is a small marmoset that inhabits tropical rainforest in the middle to upper reaches of the Amazon in Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. It is distinguished by a reddish chest and white muzzle whiskers, is diurnal, and feeds mainly on fruit. Groups are multi-male/multi-female with helpers responsible for caring for young, and scent glands are used to mark and communicate territory and reproductive status. Breeding occurs twice a year, they tend to give birth to twins, and although numbers are declining the species is assessed as Least Concern.
