About
The Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) is a large bovine native to India, Nepal, and Pakistan. It favors dry grasslands, scrub, and open woodland, avoiding dense forest and deserts. Mature males are bluish-gray in color, while females and juveniles are ochre; only males bear horns. Its diet is mixed, including grasses as well as leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds, and it is primarily active at dawn and dusk. During the breeding season males form harems; the gestation period is about 240–258 days, and females give birth to one or two young. Its conservation status is Least Concern, and population numbers are relatively stable.
